WWE Battleground Predictions

Ladies and Gentlemen of the WWE universe!!! This is the show we’ve wanted for FOUR years!!!! The Shield coming back together for a Triple Threat match AS the main event FOR the championship is EVARYTHANG!!!!! I’m entirely too excited. So let’s see how this month’s show is going to deliver.

Images courtesy
  • Darren Young vs The Miz for IC Belt- This match could be interesting but I thoroughly expect to see a cheesy mess instead. I’m just glad the silly vignettes that Darren Young and Bob Backlund have been doing will actually amount to something. I predict that Miz wins thanks to interference from Maryse and the rivalry continues for another month or two.
  • The New Day vs the Wyatt Family- This rivalry is weird to say the least. But I do get plenty of entertainment from both sides so I look forward to seeing whatever painful spots they come up with. I’m sad that Xavier Woods has been acting like the weak link lately. It will probably lead to a Wyatt Family victory.
  • Sasha Banks vs Charlotte for Women’s Title- Welcome back, Sasha. I don’t necessarily agree with her jumping into the title scene so quickly, but I’m just bitter that Naomi, Tamina, and Natalya seem to be passed over as mid-card. I wouldn’t expect Sasha to win this time, simply because SummerSlam is right around the corner. Charlotte will retain for now. I’m hoping wt see Nia Jax come to the main roster through this match, though.
  • Sami Zayn vs Kevin Owens- One more great match can be expected here. I can’t wait for one of them to get the big belt so they can rekindle this rivalry again in another year or two. For now, Sami wins.
  • Zack Ryder vs Rusev for U.S. Belt- I’m happy to see Ryder getting a little shine. I would like to see him win the belt here, but he’d probably drop it to Titus at SummerSlam afterwards. Fine by me. Woo Woo Woo!
  • Becky Lynch vs Natalya- I look forward to a technical clinic in this match. I hope Natalya really taps into that “divas of destruction” mode and wipes the floor with Becky. No shade or hate on Becky, she’s cool albeit unpolished. I’m just super extra #TeamNattie.
  • John Cena with Enzo & Cass vs The Club- This should be HI-larious as well as hyped. But then they could just hand Cena and Enzo mics and just let them host a roast and I would be entertained. I normally cheer against Cena, but I’m pulling for Enzo and Cass to win. I can’t wait for them to get a tag title run.
  • Roman Reigns/Seth Rollins/Dean Ambrose for Championship- I have wanted this match since the Shield first split up! I am so excited that it’s for the Championship and everything! It’s definitely hard to predict who will come out on top, though. I suspect Dean Ambrose will retain, because he’s the craziest one and will therefore risk the most.

See you on Twitter next Sunday for WWE Battleground! Who do you expect to come out on top?20160711_Battleground_AmbroseReignsRollins

My Matsuri Mayhem Haul

First of all, excuse my impromptu break. That was not intentional. I get a little lazy whenever a holiday offers my husband a long weekend off from work, and then it just takes a while to get back into my groove. But tonight, I’m 4 glasses into a bottle of wine and suddenly I’m feeling productive! (Don’t judge; after 8pm is mommy’s adult time over here, amIright?) So it occurred to me that I completely forgot to give you the details of all the goodies I got from Matsuri Mayhem. Let’s take a look!

  • matsuri mayhem collectiblesPandora action figure- I won this one in the door raffle. Sweet!
  • Hip Hop wall art- Purchased these at the Stencil Nation booth. Hubby is East Coast all the way.
  • hip hop stencil nationMortal Kombat perler bead sigil- Also from the Stencil Nation booth. I don’t know what to do with it but I had to have it.

  • Arsenal action figure- EH won this one in the door raffle. We’re just a lucky pair, I guess.
  • Exiles comic 2016Marvel Exiles comic Vol. 1 #90- Got this for bringing a donation for the local food bank.
  • Marvel Shadowland Blood on the Streets #4- Ok. So I brought a few donations for the local food bank.

TMNT 2: Why couldn't they do this the first time? (Spoiler-Free)

Earlier this afternoon, the husband and I decided it was time to take our 3-year-old to his first movie theater experience. He wanted to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows because he’s our child and for the last week I’ve been letting him watch the first movie once a day on Hulu. On weekends he and my husband watch the various cartoon renditions over breakfast. Now that we’re home and the kids are in bed, I’d like to share my spoiler-free thoughts with you.

First of all, this movie is so much better than the first one. I watched the first one purely out of love for the fandom and found it difficult to digest. For several reasons, I felt it didn’t do the TMNT franchise justice. This sequel however, does a much better (not perfect) job of giving me the feeling of the first cartoon while modernizing the series. (I freely admit that I did not get into the comics.)

Let’s talk characters for a moment…

  • Megan Fox is still terrible as April O’Neill but hey, make your money girl. I haven’t been impressed with her acting chops any time I’ve ever seen her, though, so maybe that’s just me being a hater. Fortunately, we don’t have to look at her much this time around.
  • Surprise! Tyler Perry gave me all the nerdy lack of morals that is Baxter Stockman. I feel like aesthetically he’s kind of a large man to play the role, but otherwise he did fine.
  • Stephen Amell as Casey Jones. I was excited for this. Athletically and personality-wise, he was perfect. I am sad that his hair was so short, but I guess long hair doesn’t make sense for the backstory he gets in this movie.
  • So Shredder’s outfit is toned waaaaaay down for this sequel, which I like. Honestly, I thought his armor in the first movie just looked excessive. I’m sad he didn’t wear the helmet more, though. Also, I’m sad Karai was largely an accessory through the whole movie. I’m a sucker for kick-ass females.
  • Krang looked like something that is going to haunt me tonight and leave me all slimy in my dreams. *cringe* BUT, it was definitely what I thought he would look like, just squishier… is that a word?teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-2-bebop rocksteady
  • Bebop and Rocksteady. Period. OMG, I loved these two! I swear it’s not just because I’m a WWE fan, either. Gary Anthony Williams and Sheamus killed it! Their bro-tastically stupid chemistry had me cracking up throughout the entire movie and definitely reminding me of their OG cartoon equivalents.
  • Honorable mention does have to go to the Bumblebee cosplayer in the parade scene. I clapped out loud in the theater at your on point transformation. Thank you for that. It gave me so much life, haha.

As far as plot, this movie did a better job of pulling from familiar Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cannon. I only felt a couple of spots where I squinted at the screen like “wha??”, so that’s an improvement. I think I enjoy that this movie seems targeted to an audience that is already familiar with TMNT, not so much trying to generate a new fan-base or appeal to the mainstream masses.

The visual effects did not disappoint me. And there was only one moment when I truly felt disbelief at what happened on the screen. It’s a fantasy world. We already have mutant turtles and ninjas and multi-dimensional aliens; but just be aware that there was one scene with a tank that I may or may not have said GTFOH out loud. Suspended disbelief has its limits, haha. Overall, however, I liked it. My husband liked it. My son was focused on the screen the entire time and he loved every minute. Geek family success!

Have you seen Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows yet? What did you think? I am by no means a movie critic. I’m just another fan who worries seeing stories from her childhood retold and rejoices when it is done right. You are welcome to agree or disagree, respectfully.

New Convention Alert!: Matsuri Mayhem

In most cases, conventions in San Antonio are hosted downtown in the Henry B. Gonzalez convention center. For my family, that means a 20-30 minute drive, paying for parking, and pushing a double stroller uphill during the quarter mile or so walk to the main entrance. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always worth it, but it’s expensive and certainly not easy. I feel fortunate that we’re locals so we don’t have the added expense of a hotel.

BUUUUUTTTT… I’m sure that given that standard, you can see how excited I would be to hear that a new convention was going to be 5 minutes from my house and charging a low entry fee. Bonus points: You get a discount if you bring something to donate to the local food bank. It’s only a one-day event, but that’s fine too. Introducing Matsuri Mayhem!

Check out the official News Story here

Few things excite me more than witnessing the start of something great. And this convention is clearly going to grow bigger and better in the coming years. My husband and I walked in and received our wristbands, raffle tickets, and free comic books. All of 10 minutes later, I won my first raffle prize! I say first, because about an hour later, my husband won as well! Consider me a fan, Matsuri Mayhem.

The Vendors area was small but had a little of everything, and my husband found some great new hip hop artwork for the house. There were a lot of cosplayers, and I wish I had at least done a closet cosplay. This little convention had EVARYTHANG! Did I mention Lip Sync Battle? Ohhhh… I must search Youtube…

No Youtube videos yet, but please believe that if I find one, I will be updating this post. In the meantime, check out a few of the cool vendors and cosplayers that I encountered at Matsuri Mayhem.

  • Queen Nexxis Cosplay– Her Velma was just too cute and she was super cool to meet.
  • Galaxy Girl Paida– She was the guest live performer and I liked that she takes requests for new songs to add to her repertoire.
  • Deadly Sweet Maid Cafe– Performed during the lolita fashion show and I hope they reach their goal of turning their gothic lolita catering company into a brick-and-mortar location. Kawaii desu ne, ladies!
  • Stencil Nation– This is where TJ found the new wall art and where my Mortal Kombat perler bead art came from. I don’t know what I’m going to do with it yet, but it was awesome so I needed it.
  • Sephi Hakubi– The guest DJ for the entire event. I think he did well even though the speakers sounded like they quit a couple times. I didn’t get to see his setup so that’s about all I can say. We’ve seen him at a couple events this year though and the crowd is always upbeat.

I don’t know if I will be around to attend next year (that’s what I keep saying even though we’re not going anywhere… a girl can hope!); but if we are, I would happily go again. I want to see more lip sync battle!

I regret not being able to stay for the cosplay contest and the after hours rave, but I’m sure they were awesome.  Have you ever been to something that was in it’s first year? Geek Mom Matsuri could be a convention one day, right? Hmm…

WWE Extreme Rules Predictions

Charlotte Nattie Extreme Rules
All images courtesy

It’s that time of the month again. Time for WWE’s monthly pay per view event. This month’s show is Extreme Rules, dedicated to the types of matches that cement legacies and shorten careers. Last month’s show Payback was pretty solid for plot development, so there’s great potential this Sunday. Here’s hoping I can do better than the roughly 50% accuracy I had on my predictions last month.

  • WWE World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles (Extreme Rules Match)- So there are basically zero rules on this match. I expect it to move all around the arena. I expect interference. I also expect it to take 2 or 3 referees for this match to see a questionable conclusion. Still waiting on that Roman Reigns heel turn, though. *taps watch* Can you win a match in a dirty fashion when it has no rules? Of course he can…
  • WWE Women’s Champion Charlotte vs. Natalya (Submission Match; Ric Flair banned from ringside)- Who do I have to beg to for Natalya to win this match? I’m going to predict that she does, but it won’t be because she legitimately won the match. Ric Flair will do something ridiculous to lose the match for Charlotte. I’m hoping that in the meantime this match will at least hold a candle to the one they had on NXT.
  • Intercontinental Champion The Miz vs. Kevin Owens vs. Cesaro vs. Sami Zayn (Fatal 4-Way Match)- This match is going to be wild with precarious alliances and powerful athleticism all over. As much as it pains me to say this, I suspect that rage will keep KO and Zayn from actually winning. Cesaro is kicking butt, but the tape on his shoulder says he’s not quite 100% yet. After he dominates the match, Miz will likely steal the victory. He’s pro at that.
  • Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho (Asylum Match)- Everything is Awesooooommmee! I got entirely too excited when I saw the Asylum cage come down on Raw. I don’t even care who wins. The WWE Universe wins this match.

Usos Bullet Club Extreme Rules

  • The Usos vs. Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows (Tag Team Tornado Match)- I will be cheering for the Usos during this match, but smart money says the-team-that-shall-not-be-called-Bullet-Club will take this one.
  • WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day vs. The Vaudevillains- Let’s be real… this match is only happening because Enzo got injured last month. There is still potential for entertainment, though. So I’m going to enjoy it. New Day will continue their reign for the time being. Maybe Enzo and Cass will make an appearance?
  • United States Champion Kalisto vs. Rusev- I would just be happy to see this match be on the main card and not the pre-show. I’ve never been a fan of Rusev, so I hope Kalisto endures.
  • Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin (No Disqualification Match)- I was surprised to see Ziggler win this matchup at Payback, but I doubt that will happen again. Should be an awesome show that puts Corbin on the radar for a belt in the next few months.

How do you expect each match to go this time around? I’m expecting another good show. Oh yeah, and John Cena will be returning. I forgot all about that. The question is where will he re-insert himself. I’ve enjoyed this break away from him, honestly. Haha. See you on Twitter this Sunday!

My Victoria's Secret Haul

Did you get in on the Victoria’s Secret Secret Rewards promotion this season? Because I did, and I made out like a bandit with $530.95 worth of VS goodies for only $60.15 out of pocket! Ok maybe we aren’t at the level for me to be showing you my underwear, but just look at it…

victorias secret haul 2016

Not pictured: 8 more purse perfumes, 2 lotion/perfume sets, 1 panty, 1 lip gloss, 1 awesome water bottle (pictured below)

So how did all this come about? One of the coupon groups I participate in on Facebook was all abuzz with people excited about stuffing envelopes. If you regularly shop at VS (I don’t), you probably know that during the month of March, you could earn a free gift card by spending $10 or more in the store. Well, there is also a no-purchase-necessary mail in option to receive these gift cards. I told a friend, and she and I invested in some stamps and dollar tree envelopes and started stuffing. Every day I dropped one in the mailbox. And then, we waited. At the beginning of April, free gift cards started coming in the mail! #YAAASSSSSSSS!!!

There were a few stipulations on these cards:

  1.  They can’t be used at VS Outlet stores.
  2.  One per transaction.
  3. Each card is valued at a minimum of $10. You can verify the value on their website before you go to the store.
  4. They must be used on or before April 27th.

Simple enough, right? (For the complete official rules, go here.) So whenever I had a free moment, I popped over to one of the 10 locations in town and I used a few gift cards. I got 3 cards valued at $20 a piece and the rest were all $10. The most efficient use I found was to choose either the VS Fantasies Body Care products (on sale 2/$10) or find a pair of panties priced at $10.50. I ended up paying just the tax in most cases, and nearly every transaction was less than $2. Let’s crunch some numbers:

Total value: $530.95 (as in, full price)

Total price: $358.95 (factors in sale prices)+29.61 tax= 388.55

Total gift cards: $328.40

Total OOP: $60.15 (what I actually spent)

Percent discount: ~85%

victorias secret water bottle
This water bottle has a sweet hidden compartment in the bottom. So far, I use it for Skittles.

<< This is me right now. In my fancy new panties, haha. I gave away some of the things I got, but otherwise I’m so glad to be upgrading the panty drawer. I’m slightly ashamed to admit that most of the stuff that was in there is definitely older than both of my children and did not come from any fancy lingerie store…

Did you get a few VS Secret Rewards card this go round? What did you get with them? I love a good discount!

Shared Post: On Black Panther's black casting

This perspective is interesting. I’m almost not sure if it makes light of the black community’s issue with the still persistent trend of “whitewashing”, or if it tries to force white America to admit their dominance by showcasing how ridiculous such outrage on their part would be. Perhaps it does both. I took it as the latter, in which case, it’s a great read. Poignant, sarcastic, but funny.

People react to Black Panther “90% Black” casting statement –

I like to think that the mainstream success of Marvel’s movies means that things like Black Panther’s undeniably great performance are being seen by enough of the black community to be an inspiration. I know that to the average adult, many of us are “too old” to be into this stuff, but every movement has to start somewhere. If people can get behind this movie and make it just as successful as the rest of the Marvel franchises, who cares if it’s a comic book hero?! How fabulous would it be if Black Panther started a new “Harlem Renaissance”? Maybe I’m just crazy…

Mini Mini Con is Evolving

classic gamefest boothMini Mini Con is a free, one-day convention held every summer. It’s hosted by the team behind San Japan and awesome little Jpop shop Nine-tails. It takes place in the common areas of one of the local malls, but the con atmosphere is still very much present. Cosplayers, karaoke, and vendors are plentiful. I’ve gone to Mini Mini Con three times now, and I’ve got to say, it’s evolving.

This year, there was a separate dealers room with vendors I have yet to see at other gatherings of this type. Normally these vendors line the halls to the visible dismay of all the regular shopkeepers. Having most of them in a designated area was a definite upgrade on their part. I also appreciated the designated gaming areas that I don’t remember seeing in years past.

In general, I noticed an overall better control of the crowds that used to intensely violate personal space during this event. I also noticed an uptick in attendance from a younger demographic. As you can see, I have taken very few pictures of cosplays this year. This is primarily due to two reasons.

  1. black mage cosplay
Can’t ever pass up a black mage! #FF4life

I did not stay for the cosplay contest this year. It was scheduled at the end of the night and two small children simply cannot be peaceful in one setting for that long. I observed all the cosplay I could in passing.

  2. Most of the cosplayers and attendees in general did not appear to be 18 or older. I do not think it’s a good idea to take pictures of other people’s children. Especially without their expressed permission. Since most of these kids were preteens and teenagers whose parents clearly dropped them off and ran, no one was around to give such permission. I know privacy is pretty much non-existent in this era of social media, but I still have respect for the concept. I wouldn’t want someone taking and posting pictures of my kids without my permission.

I love the direction that Mini Mini Con is heading. I’m not entirely sure that I can say I look forward to a lot of growth, though, because it seems like this particular event is really not intended to do that. It is more so to promote San-Japan, and I wonder if it can really do that if it does eventually take on a life of it’s own. I love the “preview” aspect of it. Maybe I’m just an addict for anticipation. One of my favorite things is going to Mini Mini Con and registering for San-Japan, but this year we couldn’t even do that because we are in the “what if” part of the cycle that is military life, le sigh. (More on that here)

I have been bit by the cosplay bug again at this event. I guess it’s time to break out the sewing machine and notions. In the meantime, enjoy this photo of my son’s first pose. Do you know a character cosplay that embodies this pose? I need ideas for him!!

My Convention Calendar for 2016 is in Flux!

I love being stationed in San Antonio. Conventions and other big events come through here regularly. The only thing between me and perpetual geek bliss is my budget. And I can get a full calendar of geek events without ever leaving the city. That said, Austin is only an hour up the road, so it’s totally worth the drive occasionallyBlack Waltz 2 FFIX
. Check out where I’m trying to go this year:

  1. **Past** PaxSouth– January 29-31, I went and loved every minute of it. I suppose I need to go write a recap post about everything I saw there even though that was before this site was a thing.
  2. Mini Mini Con– May 14 (tomorrow!!!), We love this small, free prequel to San Japan every year.
  3. Matsuri Mayhem– May 20, As far as I know this is a new event, but it’s right around the corner from my house so we might as well check it out.
  4. Anime Austin– July 15, I love being around for the inception of something new. This will be AA’s first year so I hope we get to go.
  5. Texas Comicon– July 29-31, Back in 2011, this was my first ever con. I’ve skipped a couple years after 2012 was pretty underwhelming, but this year I may be taking my mom to meet Worf.
  6. Classic Game Fest– July 30-31, This event gets bigger and better every year! I’ll probably do Texas Comicon for Friday only so that I can spend the rest of the weekend in Austin.
  7. Pick Your Poison DVD signedSan Japan– September 2-4, We never miss this awesome anime con. There are events going all day and night.
  8. Wizard World Austin– September 23-25, There is nothing I regret more than missing Wizard World the year they came to San Antonio. I’m going to this if at all humanly possible.
  9. Alamo City Comic Con– October 28-30, We have never missed ACCC since it started in 2013, and it gets better every single year. The celebrity lineup is always good and the cosplay community pulls out all the stops for this convention.

We are actually due for orders right now, so we know we’re on borrowed time beyond June. It’s killing me because the only way we can really afford to attend so many conventions is by buying the passes ahead at early bird pricing. But without knowing when our PCS is going to happen, we can’t plan that far in advance. What if I miss out on half my con schedule for this year?? NOOOOOOO!!!!!

Talk to me, geek moms… what conventions are you going to this year? I need to know what’s good geekery in the rest of the country just in case we move there.

Treat Yourself!: Chocolate-covered Strawberries

Mother’s Day is upon us, y’all! And that means strawberries are on sale at my local HEB. At 97 cents a pound, I immediately put 3 containers in my cart even though I was only there for baby food. Now if you’ve ever actually purchased from a place like Sheri’s Berries (delicious, btw) or Edible Arrangements, you know that chocolate covered strawberries are expensive in a way that doesn’t make sense. At 97 cents a pound, I can make my own damn strawberries, haha. Here’s how:

bakers chocolate heath bitsChocolate Covered Strawberries

  • 1 pound fresh Strawberries
  • 4 oz Baker’s Chocolate (1 pack)
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • (optional) Assorted toppings of your choice

  1. Rinse the strawberries under running water and dry them off with paper towels.
  2. Sprinkle a plate or platter with the sugar .
  3. Coarsely chop the chocolate bar and place into a glass container. My measuring cup was perfect for this part.
  4. Microwave the chocolate in 30 second increments until you can stir it relatively smooth. This took about 2 minutes in my microwave. (It is worth noting that friends have told me my microwave may be on steroids.)
  5. Once the chocolate is smooth, grip the strawberries by their leaves and dip them into the chocolate individually. Lay them flat on the sugar sprinkled platter.
  6. If you would like to add some sort of extra topping, sprinkle it on now before the chocolate cools.
  7. Refrigerate the tray until the chocolate hardens, at least an hour. Then treat yo’self!!

I used Heath toffee bits; but coconut flakes, sprinkles, and graham cracker crumbs are all great choices for toppings. My strawberries don’t look exactly fabulous, but they also didn’t cost $30 for 6 so…. priorities. It turns out I have an awesome friend who makes these regularly though, and she’s going to give me some pointers to make them more aesthetically pleasing. Hopefully in the near future I’ll be able to post a sequel to this with tips and tricks to make your DIY treat look like some poor soul spent $20+ on it. In the meantime, show me how you #treatyoself on Instagram and Twitter.
